Grandma and Grandpa

What can I say about how special it is to have Grandma and Grandpa here in town, loving the girls, laughing with them, and just generally supporting us in every way?  It is simply an amazing feeling, and at times a blessed relief, to know they are there.  On days when I know we are going to see them, I feel thankful, relieved and relaxed knowing it will be a smooth and fun day.  We are all winning, and that feels good.

So yeah, Grandma and Grandpa are coming over today.  We are going swimming, and having fun, and laughing and hangin' out. It's icing on the cake, too, that they are stickin' around so that Daddy and Mommy can have a date night - dinner and a movie (Bad Teacher better be good - we haven't been to a film in AGES).

I love my girls' Grandma and Grandpa.  I loathe the idea of them heading to Arizona this winter.

Boo.

Squee! - We got a new home already

And, of course, are in chaos trying to get our current home ready to sell!

But first, the fun stuff!  We chose an agent and bought a house in the same day.  Yup - nice, easy paycheque for them, however they DID come through with some great finangling for us to allow us to get the place (and having cute twin babies show up on the doorstep when the current owners were still there MAY have helped too)! On a home that had already had two offers, one above asking, and with another SIX agents asking to be notified if an offer comes through so that their clients can have a chance to respond, we somehow managed to secure this home for 6K less than asking, with washer and dryer included, and not have any other offers (i.e. 2 hour window, so no time to let the others know).

Yah, I know.  I'm lucky.  This is the second house I have gotten in this manner, when it easily could have gone to competition.  I can't explain it, and I don't ask questions.  Just know that we are ecstatic, the house is gorgeous, is in a primo location, and will make us very, very happy for a long time!

In other news, we now have to focus on selling our home quickly.  Gah.  With two little babies at home (and knowing the very reason we are moving is because there is no space for anything anymore), ya gotta know that means a LOT of work to clear the home, clean the home, and get it 'showing ready'.  In short order too because if we don't list next weekend, the following weekend is the May 2-4 weekend, and THAT isn't any good for selling.  So this means chaos, and a lot of urgent work.  In fact, I shouldn't be writing a post at all.

But I had to share.

More details to come.  Inspection on Monday and I'll take lots of pictures to share!!!!

The military brat in me is VERY EXCITED

This is because, my friends, we have decided to call it quits on our little home oasis in lieu of a more spacious bigger, fatter cousin.  Loyalty has been there for a number of years now, but with the surprise of two new little sweethearts at home, we have quickly outgrown the limited space.

And that, my dear, makes this military brat a very happy camper indeed.  Given that I have moved around all my life, and adapted constantly to new environments, it is simply not in my nature to endure the same living environment once it has become stale.  This is by far the longest I have ever lived in one home, one space, and I am frothing at the mouth in anticipation of the excitement of the hunt for the best next option!

So tonight we meet with agent option #2, as last night was agent option #1, and soon - oh so very soon - we will launch into the hunt, list our house, and have some renewed adventure in our lives (because, ya know, it's been rather dull the last couple of years...).  Oh goooodie!

We've already started to purge in anticipation, and my stove, thanks to grandma?  Spotless.

More to come on this very cool endeavour...

Desert by moonlight - A great anniversary

You know, with two little babies around 24/7 these days, it was pretty easy not to have given any thought at all to our 3-year anniversary. But, as luck would have it, the idea for a special night dropped in my lap, and I jumped on it.

Our recent trip to Mesa, Arizona was a study in orchestration (more on that in another blog post), and meant that for a good chunk of the trip, my husband was back in Ottawa.  However, on the evening of his return to Mesa for the last few days of the trip, a special phenomena was taking place; what they called the 'super moon'. I discovered that a nearby county park (one of the amazing benefits of my parents' location is their proximity to the nearby desert mountains for hiking) Usary Mountain Regional Park was putting on a park ranger-led moonlight hike that night, and it was free.

Now, I don't think there has been a single trip I have taken to Mesa yet that hasn't included a nice, sunny hike, but this time? No go. I was hoping to go with the girls in carriers on an easy hike, but, uh...you'll hate me for saying this but the temperature was too hot for hiking while we were down there!  So...enter moonlight hiking!

It was great, and so very romantic.  Just the two of us...and about 400 others. But really, it WAS great. Very cool to see the Saguaro cacti rising up against the night sky, and see all the funkier cacti, like the jumping cactus, lit up along the path. The iPhone even managed to capture the scene with the lights of Mesa and Phoenix in the background.

The hike was admittedly short (there were a lot of kidlets and seniors along for the ride), but I really enjoyed the evening, which started off wonderfully at a nearby restaurant which came highly recommended to us, El Rancho Tia Rosas.

YUMMY.

I started with a margarita (of course) and we had the tomales for our appetizer. For the main course, Art chose the traditional fajitas, and I had the seafood enchiladas.  Sooo good.  Some pix:

And of course, we couldn't stop there. We ordered desserts, and those might have been the best part. We shared the churros (that had custard piped in them and were drizzled with caramel -OMG) and tried Sopapillas for the first time.  Soooo goood!

It was a great night. So lovely. So unplanned. Such a treat, with honey on top (of the sopapillas).

Hitting my stride

As a new Mom you get totally sick of hearing the following phrase: "It gets so much easier when they hit 3 months old!".

Well, I'm here to tell you it is totally true!  My girls are so friggin' fun now - they are observant, grasping onto things, crying less, eating well, laughing and giggling aaaaaand......SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT.  Rare is the night when either of them wakes up to eat, and if they do, you can tell they are going through a growth spurt, and you may benefit from lots of extra sleep through the daytime as a result.

So...all you new Mamas out there?  Just hold on!  It gets better....

Unless, of course, you are some of the lesser group of poor Moms who have a colicky baby or one that just simply doesn't sleep well.  I know some of them, and I don't know how they do it.

But then, I hear women say those words directed at me, and I feel like I am really lucky and have great babies.  It's not even all that hard right now. And really?  I cannot WAIT until they can sit up and play with each other.

Some new things they do:
  • They smile IMMEDIATELY when you smile at them.
  • They grasp onto things easily and don't always let go.
  • They look at each other and smile or giggle; and
  • They laugh - especially, it seems, when they see each other or themselves in the mirror. (We got video of this yesterday with Hailey and love it.  Such an amazing memory to capture, even if we only caught the tail end of it on video - it took me so much by surprise, since it was her first full on laugh, and it lasted a good minute!  Too cute.)
Every day I see new developments - so fun.

Protecting my thoughts

CANNOT believe I never backed up my blogs before tonight.  Such a simple thing to do, I discovered, and how stupid was I to leave it this long?  I would be devastated if I ever lost all these thoughts, photos, memories, connections, comments etc.

This is the link that told me how to do it, but really?  Go to the dashboard, hit settings, click on 'export' and then export it to save it on your computer.  Easy peasy.

If you have a blogger blog, do this.  Do it now. And often.

That is all.

Oh, and have a good weekend!

Connectivity and cool people

So a few weeks ago I caught a tweet from a twitter contact that said something to the effect of "I'm in the Christmas spirit.  I will give a free photo shoot to the first person who replies."

To which I, of course, replied..."am I too late?"

This woman, @cornPuppies on Twitter, agreed to come to our home (house call !) and take family shots of the four of us using natural light.  All I can say is WOW.  She took some incredible shots, and even one or two flattering shots of my husband and/or I - a feat that not many people can claim they have managed!!! What's really incredible is that she just loves photography as a hobby and doesn't want to move into any sort of paying gig, so this is sheerly for her fun - and our very appreciative benefit!

I have added some of the shots to the photo slideshow on this blog, but here are a couple faves:

More to come, as she is willing to come again and again to snap some photos as desired.  I will surely take her up on this.

I cannot understate how beneficial it has been, for a variety of reasons, to be connected to wonderful people on social networks. It amazes me that anyone would NOT be on here, meeting great brains, lovely comedians, local artisans and personalities, and friends. It's truly a rewarding experience.

Enough with the photos, right?

So I finally had a few minutes to finally figure out how to create a Flickr feed onto the blog, set up a page exclusively for the slideshow, and upload photos to my Flickr page.  This will mean that I don't have to post a million photos to my main page posts, but you can see all the latest shots on the latest photos tab on the top right of this blog.

It's still not fancy coding or design - one of these days I will take some training and do a much better job of this - but it's still cool and new and a better way to showcase my new and beautiful little family...

Do you have tips for me?  I know there are ways to upload photos from my mobile phone to Flickr? How does one do that? One day I hope to have time to figure that out too...

In the meantime, hope you like it!

Bloggin from my new iPhone

It's my 'push present'- not jewelry or a spa thing or something else traditionally romantic, but it's what I want and love - to be connected and free to participate in the online conversation at any time.

I got my iPhone today!

So I'm trying this out... Hubby took a shot of me tonight at 36 weeks, and so I'm going to try Post the shot. Now, be forewarned... This isn't an edited shot, and it's not pretty. But reality often isn't, right?

Here I am!

Ah... Maybe not. Can't see menu option to upload photo, and also can't figure out how to copy and paste a hyperlink option... Ah growing pains!

More 3D shots

Oh, I almost forgot to post some recent 3D shots of both baby A and baby B!

So here they are, at 26 weeks.  I am now at 29 weeks and growing.  They are each almost 3lbs each already.

So here's my question for you. I think they look very different from one another.  Your thoughts?

Just...wow.

The funniest thing lately has been to catch a view of myself in the reflection of windows or mirrors. It's shocking to me just how big this belly already is at only 26 weeks.  I meet and/or know women who are days away from their due dates who look smaller...it's crazy.

In other amusing news, our couch, which was a Real Canadian Superstore bargain when we bought it over 6 years ago, is sucking me in.  It's not only a circus routine to get out of it, but it's a great source of amusement to my husband, who likes to make grunting/groaning noises even as he assists in hefting me up to my feet.

In case you missed it...here's the belly.
I can't wait for the professional shots I have lined up at the end of September.  Seems crazy that the shoot is still almost two months away and that THAT date is still over a month away from the due date!?!  Nuts.

Another ultrasound, this time a level 2 in depth one, is coming up in two days, followed by another dialogue with the doctor.  With all the activity I have been feeling (I THINK mostly from Baby A, but ya can't always be totally sure with two of them in there), there's excitement to see them again, even if it is mixed in with trepidation... This past couple of weeks feels like a major leap forward in their size, as I felt distinct baby parts moving and kicking out, pushing against my abdomen, and it just feels like space is being eaten up at an alarming rate.

Also cool?  The kick - mommy touch - kick in response action is amazing, as detailed in my last post. Instinct or no, ya can't help thinking "what a brilliant little baby you are!"....

So yeah.  Recap = Massive belly sure to get even more massive. Cool stuff related to the former. More info to come in a couple days...

Bonding with Baby A

I will tolerate any level of discomfort if it comes with play time with my babies.

Now this is not to say that Baby B isn't part of the action, but she is certainly not crazy active like Baby A is!  Imagine, if you will, you wake at 4am and feel kicks/punches and movement in your belly. So cool.  You can visibly see your stomach moving around.  Awesome.  And then you realize, when you respond by pushing down and around on the tummy where the 'body parts' are elbowing, punching and kicking, that after a moment, the baby responds to your touch at the spot you are touching!

Little baby parts, responding to your touch, playful. Speechless with joy.  Laughter. Fun.  - it's amazing, folks.  Truly cool.

I love these little babies more than I can express.  It's too much for words.

Have a great weekend everyone.  Be sure to experience joyful exuberance if you can!

Motley Crue sang about it, and we're gonna live it...Girls, Girls, Girls!

Yes, the ultrasound revealed...our home will be FILLED with giggles, flirtatiousness, pink clothing (gak) and a lack of pee pee tee pees - 'cause we're having TWO GIRLS.

Didn't expect that, really.  Don't know why, but all the kids on my hubbie's side have been boys, and I just for some reason thought that we'd have at least one boy, but girls are great, and we can't wait...

But just so we are clear...pink will be worn as CLOTHING only due to necessity (don't want those well-meaning ooers and aaaahers mistaking them for boys, just 'cause they are in red or something), but the nursery will be decorated with primary, bright colours, which kids love.  And Barbies?  We'll see how long I can avoid them and push the Lego.  Sports, ladies?  Let's go swimming instead, or play catch!

We are very excited....wow....now for name picking!

Music - Catharsis, relaxation and passion

From time to time I encounter people who aren't that 'into' music. Alan Rock did a The Ongoing History of New Music ditty that talked about the fact that some people are truly lacking the gene that appreciates patterns in rhythm, which, he says, is why humans are drawn to music and to creating sound and regular beats. He, of course, says this much more eloquently than I, but no matter...the point is that I have ALWAYS been passionate about music, and if I am tense, or stressed, or sad, or extremely happy - whatever my mental state - I need music. I just can't go very long without it.

Are you this way? Do you have radio stations set up and want to share your faves or tastes? I am an avid user of Blip.fm and would love to share some of my faves with you. Go to my station. Set up your own. Remind me of songs I am forgetting that are exceptional. And if you do this, and you want to share, add me as a favourite, and I will add you to mine. Fun stuff.

Happy Sunday everyone.

I DID it! The birthdate of a new blog: Me2pointoh.com !!!

Okay...so thanks to my friends on Twitter, I have finally taken the plunge to buy the domain name I have wanted to start this second "What the hell am I doing?" blog that will be all about my forays, stumbles, success stories and embarrassing moments in social media communications.  I see it as an account of some of my observations, resources I find and what they are good for, and PLENTY of comments about what isn't going right along the way.  I CANNOT WAIT!

Of course...now I have to design the damn thing!  Will be starting with a Wordpress theme of some sort, and welcome any and all help you have.  I long for good advice, people!!!

But...it's a start, and it is very exciting to me to, as one of my tweeps said, "own a little piece of the internet"!

Cool.  Time for bed.

Twitter Tip: every Sunday evening, people use the hashtag #blogchat to discuss their blogs, ideas, best practices and offer help. It's great.  Tune in.  (about 9pm EST)

Finally! Our kitchen Reno pix

For everyone who has been asking to see the tranformation, and for anyone who wants ideas or a look-see on kitchen design, take a look at the Before & After presentation deck I did up showcasing our new kitchen.  This redesign gave me storage and functionality as well as style that I needed to stay in our little house for a while longer and not have me go insane....

So...what do you think?  Show me yours - send links to your transformations too!

Happy Sunday everyone!

Animal instincts

This week, a friend and potential coworker on some small side jobs I may do, asked me to complete an analysis of my personality. Called the Kolbe A, it was an analysis of my 'conative' index. My instinctual responses when I am in 'action mode'. The results? Were bang on. I found it really fascinating, especially given that the quiz itself I found frustrating and dissatisfying due to format, cryptic wording, and choices I didn't feel truly reflected answers I would generally choose.

Some of the most interesting 'observations' about me?

"You are terrific with future-oriented challenges and deal with the essential information without getting bogged down in the details."

I had a 9 out of 10 in the Quick Start mode, which meant that I was high on the Improvisation scale and very low on Stabilization. In lamens terms, I love and embrace change. Yup, I certainly do. Specifically, I "initiate change, improvise solutions, generate slogans, defy the odds, promote new opportunities, etc."

Even better, I am a 2 out of 10 on the Follow Through mode, which is really funny to me. But while it might be stressful for me to have to finish up all the little details, being in the low range means I am an 'adapter'. I "find ways around problems, multitask and thrive on interruption, revise approaches, diversify and am flexible".

In the Implementor mode, I am an Imaginator (not a builder). I "concoct out of thin air and deal with abstractions. I capture the essence of things and can envision the way things should be."

And finally, I am right in the middle of the "Fact Finder" mode. This implies I am an 'explainer'. I don't specialize, but neither do I generalize. I rewrite, edit and fact check. I work within priorities, start with the highest probability, and create documentation and instructions. Essentially, I am a bridge to help people who understand only simple elements of a topic to understand specifics and expert details. Pretty bang on, I would say.

Now, the funniest elements of my results related to the things that are my 'stressors'. If you know me REALLY well, you will totally laugh at some of these, and potentially, even manage to put people's names beside certain elements!

My stressors?
- having to prove my point or argue over facts
- being asked to oversimplify and/or get bogged down in details
- being overly scheduled, told to follow specific steps, or follow rigid rules
- having to repeat myself
- being asked to edit my ideas
- avoid potential risks
- conform and/or work toward known outcomes
and finally
- I am likely to be driven nuts by things or people that take too long to get to the point, aren't focused, and anything that is boring, repetitive and predictable.

The best were the Kolbe Tips, though. They said I needed to 'seize the moment when I have ideas - don't wait, or debate'. I should also 'take time to do nothing after working intensely on deadlines' (consider it done). And finally, 'self-provoke to get where you want to go. You often have to goad yourself to initiate action you desire."

Ya got me.

But now I want to know about others. Have any of you done these types of analysis? What did they say about you? I wish I had the user manual for everyone I know!

For all you winos out there!

I finally get it. I understand the value of Twittering! Today, I decided to do a twitter search on my favourite topic - wine - and it was amazing the kinds of resources that came up, posted by other winos. They directed me, for one thing, to my new online cellar - www.cellartracker.com - it's fantastic. Got wine at home and want to see the tasting notes? Want to manage the value of your cellared wines? Want to build a wish list and refer to it later? Ya can do it here, and that, my friends, is cool. As is the cellaring notes and optimal maturity dates, etc.

I am still working out how to build a proper network to get the most out of this social networking tool, but I can see the value in getting information you want quickly. I think the big problem is that most of my pals are not on Twitter, that I know of. None of you are, are you? If you are....ya gotta tell me, because there is only so much that Jamie Oliver or Bobby Flay can say of relevance in a day, you know?
